Mission Statement
Maintain a constant awareness of the needs of our Members. Work with our Members to meet their needs and deliver high quality service, reliability, and affordable electric power.
1803 Electric Cooperative is a not-for-profit generation and transmission cooperative. We produce and procure electricity and deliver it to our Members, who then distribute the power to the end-use members they serve. Its our Members that sets 1803 apart from investor-owned electric utilities as our Members are our owners. Our Members govern us; not a group of investors. The goals and activities of 1803 are focused on the evolving needs of our Members and in accordance with the 7 cooperative principles.
History of 1803 Electric Cooperative
On April 1, 2019, 1803 Electric Cooperative was officially organized by its Louisiana distribution cooperative Members. Over the next several years, 1803 then embarked on a large-scale process to select a group of power purchase agreements that would be 1803’s initial power supply portfolio. On January 25, 2022, 1803’s portfolio was approved by the Louisiana Public Service Commission (LPSC) who regulates the rates and services of 1803 as a Louisiana public utility.
While the original catalyst for the formation of 1803 was focused on wholesale power supply, the 1803 Members soon determined that 1803 could provide additional value to its Members by providing transmission related operations also. After building out the many processes required for transmission operations, 1803 has now integrated its transmission system into MISO. 1803 is currently operating as a Local Balancing Authority in MISO and will soon be a MISO Transmission Owner.
1803 began serving its first Member on January 1, 2025 and began serving the remaining Members on April 1, 2025. Collectively, 1803’s Members serve approximately 500,000 end-users in Louisiana.
